Nyah speaking up for Tommy on the underground scene and his going to bat for her with his agency add tension that wouldn’t be present in a same race relationship. The racial diversity of the characters adds another layer of nuance to the story. If you’re more familiar with one musical community than the other, this book can be a window into another world. Music lovers will enjoy seeing the underground music scene juxtaposed with the classical. He needs Nyah to vouch for him on the underground scene and she needs him to represent her. Tommy “Boombox” Mills is an agent with some clout. A double bassist for the philharmonic by day, and by night she’s Queen Roe-an underground DJ with a growing following. In this book, Nyah Monroe is a twofold musician.
